Homestead Wildlife

Old Kazoo Maker:
One of my favorite activities here at the homestead is taking pictures and making video of our wildlife and landscape.  This is our fifth year here at the homestead and I must have well over a couple thousand pics and vids LOL.  I always keep a camera with me when walking in the homestead woods.  You just never know what will pop up.  Yesterday I was walking the back forty and came up on a half dozen or so turkeys and each morning look out the window at sunrise and watch the deer sneak back in the woods from feeding in the field.

Hi OKM

Very nice pic .... We'd really like to see more!

There's a Gallery here in the Forum where you can post your wilderness pics etc ... if you get some time to put some up, I know I'd love to see them.

I'll be putting more up as I get time too.

Cheers

I went to a nearby marsh/pond today and recorded some audio and video, hoping to see some interesting activity.

We set the camera up on a tri pod, and the audio recorder nearby, and then drove off for an hour enjoying the sites.

After collecting the gear, and getting back home, I quickly put the audio and video together and converted to mp4 then back to avi, and burned a DVD to enjoy the playback while having a bite to eat.  We expected to see some ducks or perhaps a deer on the far shore, but nothing - this time.

oh well, as I like to say "can't get any interesting footage unless you're out there, and you can't get lots of good footage unless you're out there - A LOT!"  and that means, alot of editing too!

Good thing I had another recorder on back at the homestead, which recorded some excellent 'song bird' soundscapes.

I'll post some once I have something worth seeing/hearing.

Do you ever do any time lapse photography, Glenn?  Something like maybe four to six frames per minute?  That way you can leave a camera for a few hours and hope for at least a couple good shots.  I also like to set up a game cam sometimes in an area known to be frequented by any kind of wildlife, with the motion detection you can leave it for days at a time and get some pretty interesting shots.

No sound, but that can be dubbed after the fact.  Seems you have even more wildlife there than we do here...

Hey JOOM
I haven't tried any time lapse photography, but it sounds interesting.

I like the idea of the game cam as well, set for motion detection... I can envision having about 6 of them, a pair set up at 3 different locations, that way there'd be 2 angles to see, and with multiple locations it would just be a matter of doing the 'circuit' and collecting the results. ...similar to what I do with audio, having multiple recorders around the lake or woods.

I've got some sound clips of animals that I have absolutely no idea what could be making the sound, or call. It's fun trying to guess which animal it might be though...and can really play on the imagination.

I'm listening to my mics in my backyard right now, hearing the chorus frogs is very relaxing and always reminds me of camping, sleeping in a tent under the stars.

Cheers.
Glenn
