Title: what's goin' on
Post by: Glenn on October 28, 2013, 04:59:39 PM
It's been a busy summer/fall, and I haven't had much time for some of the things I've wanted to do, and to get done.

I've met some great people in my travels and adventures, along the canoe routes etc... some, (who I'd thought might appreciate it - ) I've given CD's (Music and Nature) to for their personal enjoyment and relaxation.

Seems I'm doing more and more 'catch up' stuff than I used to... not sure if that just means I'm busier, or that I'm slowin' down some! lol.  Either way, it sure gives a guy something to 'wake up to" each day.  So much to do - so little time to do it in, it seems.  8)

One step at a time I guess... like anything that seems too big... how do you conquer it... like eating an elephant... just go one bite at a time! lol.

I've managed to complete several projects this year.. and I have a few more to complete yet.
Many of my CD projects are being distributed at several locations now, for retail - thanks to the hard work of Maureen.

Collaborations with other musicians has been a lot of fun, and rewarding too.

The Song Challenges that I've had time to participate in have been not only a good 'distraction' when I've been up to my ears in other projects, but they've allowed me the opportunity to write and finish some tunes that I'd likely not have been able to, had it not been for the 'challenge' of it all.

There've been a few times that I've felt "and the reason for doing this is... ? .... "  but then I've received PM's and emails and comments on some of the music that I've produced, posted, and shared, and the feedback has been very positive.

I'm looking forward to plugging ahead with more editing of the recordings I've done out in the field, in the wilderness and on the lakes.  More projects in the works there.

...and more songs to finish, and to get started on...

and so it goes.

have a great day!

and post some music, pics, notes.... or just say 'howdy'...it's always nice to hear what others are doing too.  8)

Hey Way2 - yeah, makin' the most out of the time we have ... we tend to make time for the things that are 'important' to us.

===========

update>  So, here in Canada, and this part of Ontario - the season has been very mild really!  It's allowed me the time and opportunity to go out in the canoe and in the bush to record longer into the season than ever before.  The temps have been just reaching the freezing mark lately...

now the ponds are beginning to freeze over, the lakes are so cold you can't put your finger in the water for more than 30 seconds without feeling numb!  ???

I've been taking advantage of the sun - as it warms things up temporarily during the day - taking pictures and video and recording the sounds of the Canadian wilderness in the Fall.
I'm hoping to get a good close, and clear call from a moose, but no luck yet... it's all in the timing I guess.

In Algonquin Provincial Park ( for canoes ONLY, no motor boats) ...  there is a lake I've been visiting all summer and fall, following the growth and developement of 2 baby loons and their parents.

We've been documenting on video, the progression of the growth of these loons, as the season changes and the ice moves in, hoping they'll make it off the lake before they get caught in the 'freeze up' soon.

There's still one young adolescent loon that is just getting it's wings, trying to fly, but unable to lift itself off the surface of the water.  Loons need a very VERY long runway in which to get airborn .... maybe 300 to 400 meters or more.

It's parents and older sibling left the lake over a week ago, and now, it's been left to fend for itself, survival of the fittest comes into play here, it is the only visible animal on the lake except for a few wood ducks ....  but it's interesting that the sound of many birds have populated the area that was silent 2 weeks ago... I believe this is because migrating birds from up North, are stopping off for a break on their way South for the winter.

I hope I'll be able to get back to the lake to record the little loon flying away on it's first migration - if the snow and ice don't block me from getting there. (safety first).

Much of the video I'm taking of the loons is going toward the production of our Video we're doing on the "Loons of Algonquin - The First Migration".    We're making it as it happens, and we don't know how it's going to conclude at this point.  8)

not sure how this is going to end up.... but if you want to see what we're up to, you can view the video production of what we have so far... and tune back in as we produce more 'parts' to the movie/documentary as we go.  I think there'll be about 5 parts in all.

here's a link to the parts we have so far
http://www.gmhcafe.ca/gforums/index.php?topic=895.msg5164#msg5164 (http://www.gmhcafe.ca/gforums/index.php?topic=895.msg5164#msg5164)

Enjoy!

Glenn

One of the sites I read while researching Loons said that some young loons stay behind, and continue to eat, fattening up to  make the long journey south.  But at a point, it becomes a "double edge sword" so to speak.

Loons bodies are not adapted for cold weather, so they burn more energy trying to stay warm in the north.  The colder the temperatures, the more food they need to consume to get the calories to stay warm.  Causing them to fish more,  using more energy and calories.

Eventually it becomes self defeating - Calories used for staying warm, and fishing take away from the calories they need to migrate south.   :o    and either they get trapped in the North, or struggle to make the long journey to a warmer climate.

As much as I'd like to see the young loon again, I'm hoping it has started the migration, as it's pretty nippy here now.  brrr.   (motherly instincts kicking in here.  lol)    The weather forecast is showing good weather coming up (for this time of year)... so maybe we can get in one more canoe trip.   ;)

We were out on the lake shooting some more video yesterday, while the sun was shining.
We got that segment done just on time I think... rain and snow is supposed to be on this weeks menu.

I may head out one more time just to get some good 'frozen lake' pics etc. for some good closing scenes.

I just edited some recordings from the wilderness - recorded Sept 24/25 .... and

I have a few moose calls from a distant bay on the lake I was recording night sounds etc.  As dawn approached, a moose came near the shore, followed by another moose in the same area... I think one is a cow, the other - a bull.

If I can optimize the file so it's listenable, I'll post it, if anyone's interested in hearing it.

Now that I've been getting longer record times from a single session, it sure makes editing a lot more tedious... but in the long run, I think there's more yeilded from the extra effort.

I hate going out, but I've been under twice this year and came out no worse than I was. I suspect my 4 concussions have messed me up worse than the anesthesia. :P

Good luck, man.

Just before all that snow fell in our area, my snow thrower tire went flat! and it wouldn't let the 'drive' move it forward so I could get rid of the snow.

So the plow has been by about 5 times since then, doing our driveway at about $30 bucks per run!  ouch!

I've been trying to get the tire off to bring it in the house to thaw out, it's so cold out there. and I can't manhandle the machine by myself, nor the sliding glass door myself, so I can get at the tire repair.  what a rig a moroll!

Finally, Chris (my 23 year old) came out for a visit, and we messed with it in -22C temps, finally looked at the manual.. scratched out heads.. rust abounds.. this isn't working the way I planned...

just need to refill the air in the tire so it will seal back up...

so with Chris here for a visit, time to put my idea to the test, - we'll just move the whole snow thrower into the house, by taking off the sliding glass door, and slip it through, set it in the 'rec' room that has a concrete floor.. to thaw.

we had about 1/4 inch to spare!!!  success on getting it in.

now we'll see if we can get it to re-seat itself by adding some air pressure to the tire once we've cleaned the rust and grime from the rim.

we'll see...

>> Update

tire thawed.

rim cleaned and air pressure applied...

filled to tire to 28psi

... now to see if it holds ...
check it in the morning.

and back to moving snow from our 70 ft long driveway and parking for 8 cars. (Maureen needs room to back up and pull out... lmao) she thinks she's a trucker when she drives the car or van.. like it's an 18 wheeler.  Truck drivin' mama!

 ;D

Good luck with the tire, Glenn.  Seems like this stuff always happens at the worst times.

Our drive is 110 yards from house to road, and we keep a large area plowed away from the drives and around the house so we don't get too much heavy drifting in the bad storms...

Not that cold here, but Rosie backed into the garage and ripped the sidewall of her left rear tire on the axle of the new grill. :o   Her son is in from Oregon and needed the car, so he changed it. ;)

lol... Maureen just corrected me... she says .. the house is 80 feet long, and it's at least 40 feet from the road so add that to the 70 I said.. plus the driveway goes back to the garage.. so add another 30 feet to that...so... I guess it's double what I said... lol..

it's time to clean out the garage.. so I can work on stuff in there next time! I think about 6 loads to the dump with the new van should take care of that!

I still gotta get my drivers license re-issued, after mistakenly cutting it up! (thinkin' it was my old 'health card' ...  sigh!     :o  >:(  ???  ::)   just gotta laugh at stuff like that!
 :P  :P  :P

 8)

the snow thrower tire seems to be holding it's own today... and it's nice and sunny out.. so ... time to get at 'er.

Oh yeah, so the reason why I couldn't work in the garage on the snow thrower's tire -

because I had to clear the snow out first.

It's parked in the garage now though!

 ;D

pic: blowin' the snow away from the garage double doors.   And winter is just started - 3 months to go!

Hey everyone - Maureen here - Glenn went in for his "routine" check and scope at the hospital.  Well,  it was everything  but routine for us.  Glenn remains in the hospital, and goes in for surgery tomorrow.

Today was a flurry - We're not sure how long he'll be in the hospital.

Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers, I'll send an update tomorrow afternoon after we talk with the surgeon again.

lookin' on the bright side, it could be a lot worse...  the doc said I'm a 'text book' patient... not overweight, blood work, blood pressure ...  all that stuff was bang on the mark so that was good to hear.

I'm still wrapping my mind around the events of this past week.

We get dealt certain cards, and we have no choice in the matter, you gotta deal with the cards we're dealt.

I'll have to write about it in the SMC, never know, it might be good therapy for me, on the other hand, if I'm still under the influence of the good meds, it may come out a little on the avantegard side.

What Dream

 Chorus

 I had a wet dream
Yeah I had a wet dream
 I'm worried and bothered
 And scared half to death
 What will Elizabeth think
 I had a wet dream
Yeah I had a wet dream
 I could understand
 If I dreamt about Elizabeth
 I had a wet dream
Yeah I had a wet dream.
 I'm worried and bothered
 And scared half to death.

 V-1

I dreamt of Captain Hook and his rugged crew.  On the rugged sea dress in their filly clothes.
They drank whiskey and rum and had cute buns.
Seen sign of the skull they had fun on da hull.
I was overwhelmed as they took turn at the helm.
Then it happened as I woke up with a scream.

 V-2

Went to see a man estememed in psychology.
That quack didn't understand what I was going through.
He showed me pictures that didn't seem right.
He anaylyse and drill me with questions that got my suspicion.
When he came with that bottle of Cherry  flavored candy.
He tried to rub it on my chest with that smile.
He snickered and said you had a what dream.
Got out of there in a hurry and never looked back

 V-3

All afternoon couldn't get that dream off my mind
Started daydreaming about that crazy wet dream Seemed after that all the guys had cute little behinds.
Thought I was going crazy when I came to my senses.
Decided all it was was just a dream afterall
When Elizabeth came I was no longer scare to death.
Cause all my funtions were working in all the right places

 V-4

I laughed it all off cause it was only a dream.
Told Elizabeth about my crazy wet dream.
She laughed and said you had a what dream.
Then she snickered at me  and told me her secret.
I'm sorry should of told you that I am a man.
I have no excuse I'm just a man.A man Noooo!!!

Got other there in a hurry when she told me her secret.
And now I am scared half to death

Some have been askin' about the 'arm' and how it's goin' lately, and I do appreciate that guys/gals.

Since this pinched nerve in the arm/neck area happened while undergoing colon surgery back in Jan.. I've been healing, and going to the Doc's quite a bit, and therapy as well.

The arm is still numb in the bicep and forearm, hand and thumb.. still can't 'curl' my fist against gravity and pull it up to my shoulder.. there's just nothin' there. The other muscles that do work are getting stronger and I do have full 'finger' and hand motion, but not much arm motion really.

Physiotherapy has me on a set of exercises that I do 3 times a day, it involves a lot of stretching and muscle control, etc.  I have to stretch and push, then give it a nudge (ouch) when I'm at the 'limit' ... lots of fun.

I've been undergoing some 'cold laser' therapy as well, along with some chiropractic therapy and that is helping the healing process a lot.

So I played keys the other day, right handed... and it was good to be recording, just to see how it all felt for a short session. and I gotta say, it felt good.

Placed the guitar in my left hand, holding it tightly, then positioned it - made a few chord changes, but when I went to do a 'bar' chord.. the arm let go and flopped down... but at least I had the ol' baby in my arms for a few minutes!

I'm making improvements.. healing time.

I was thinking, maybe wrongly, but do you have redress on the medics who treated you?

As far as I know, there are 'limitations' with regards to this, although it's not unheard of to have some investigation done. I'm hoping for a full recovery.

thanks Gaz, he he.. you never know - ...

I've been 'commissioned' by Algonquin Park to have two albums ready for them for spring, and I was just wrapping up a Master on another project just before I went into the hospital, so.. there's lot's on the burners to get movin' on again.

Hey guys... thanks so much for your thoughts and good vibes!

Great news!!!  I had the consult with the oncologist today, and discussed all the details and results... and ....  according to the doc, I'm cancer free!  ... and there's no need for chemo treatments at this time.. so that is fantastic news after all.  She said the surgeon is a real 'artist'.

Now I can concentrate on getting the arm back in motion so I can pick up the guitar again... the doc says it'll take some 'time' to let the nerve heal and regenerate down the length of my arm (many months) ... so I'll be workin' around that for a while yet.

Too much to do and too many things to accomplish to let any sittin' around and commiserating get in the way...

It's a New Day!

thanks again - for all your well wishes and cool vibes. means a lot!

Look forward now to back to normal and beyond.
I have not, as yet, got anything going for Feb's challenge but I might use that them (Internet friendships) as a theme if I can get a backing track from somewhere.......

Indeed... the internet can be as shallow or deep as one makes it.

I also feel the friendship and bond you mention Dave... acquaintances can become friendships that are as real or even more so than meeting in person.  It's all what you make of it, eh?

I like your idea for the theme to work into the SMC song challenge this month.

I have a few ideas too.. just gotta see which one moves me the most, then go with it.

mile markers in the improvement of the use of my arm this past week.

The physiotherapy and exercises, chiropractor (cold laser treatment etc), and massage therapy are all helping.

I did an arm curl ... pulled my hand up to the neck of the guitar and played a few chords.

I'm doing as much with my dominant left arm as possible now, even if I have to put it there with my right arm first -

the arm and hand is still numb, and tingly, but it seems to be getting a bit less in the forearm and bicep area now.

what a relief! - and I'm hoping it won't take  the amount of time some of the doc's have said it'll take - up to a year!    I'm hoping to be paddling the canoe and playing guitar this spring/summer.

determination is key! .. along with a good measure of positive attitude toward reaching the 'goal' I've set for myself instead of what others have 'set' for me!

It's just micro improvements on a daily basis... but it adds up as the weeks go by.

I think the nerve is starting to regenerate, as the tingling and numbness are getting less in the arm and thumb.

I hand wrote the lyrics to my SMC tune yesterday, with my left hand.. yay! and it's readable too. lol.

Did 5 arm curls (without weights) today.  8)

I think the bicep has fired itself up.... because

I played keyboard (left handed and separate right hand motions) today for about 2 minutes..

I'm up to doing 10 arm curls now (with no weights) ... another improvement.

I can bring a fork up to my mouth in my left hand again... another mile marker.

wooohoooo.

slow, steady improvements.

It appears that the number of Doc appointments,  tests, scans, MRI's etc etc are pretty much done now... I hope.   Last MRI today for the nerve in the neck and arm.

The arm is almost full range now, and strength is coming back, bicep is fired up working -
I can play guitar and bar chords again, and keys etc etc.. back to almost normal.

It's been a long haul, but I've worked hard at getting back to me ol' self!

feels good!

Title: The Algonquin Experience Re: what's goin' on
Post by: Glenn on April 07, 2014, 03:21:43 PM
It's been 3 full months since my surgery and accompanying 'adverse occurance' which caused my arm to be out of commission while a pinched nerve repaired itself ... and now I'm about 90% + + and getting stronger as each days goes by - thanks to good therapy and proper exercise and stretching.

I've been working toward getting 2 albums together, CD's for Algonquin Provincial Park, one of Canada's largest and most popular wilderness parks - known for it's pristine beauty, through many audio and visual works, including the works from the famous Artists' "Group of Seven".

The projects are in the "Music & Nature" genre, and these 2 are particularly near and dear to me - as they'll feature both "Kings of the water" and "Kings of the land" in each respective CD.

The Algonquin Experience

I've spent years recording not only loons, and wolves, but all kinds of "Wilderness Soundscapes" in the wilderness of Northern Ontario, here in Canada - and it's become a passionate past time and a very rewarding process, to say the least.

These 2 upcoming CD's will be what I'd term as a true reflection of the Algonquin Experience - from the sounds of paddling the lake in a lone canoe, to sitting 'round the campfire listening to the wolves and owls howling and hooting, to the relaxing forest stream, .... and more - all to be heard and enjoyed on these new albums.

The Common Loon, with it's hauntingly beautiful 'wail' is featured in one CD, while the majestic wolf, and it's ominous and sometimes 'eerie' howl, is the star of the second CD.  You'll hear various recordings that occurred while paddling and camping throughout this serene and pristine wilderness park.

While recovering from my surgery and waiting for the arm to heal, I edited countless hours of recordings taken last year in the wilds of Algonquin, - from loon and wolf calls, to the various birds, ambient soundscapes and other wild life that presented itself to my recorders that were in various locations throughout the forests, lakes and streams in the area.

The recordings amounted to well over 300 hours of material, from over 15 separate trips into the Algonquin bush ... much of it done in the canoe, as the main way to get around in the park is via the ancient Native canoe routes, and the hiking trails that weave throughout the huge wilderness reserve.

After editing the material down to the 2 hours I've selected as best suiting the projects, I began tracking the music which I have been composing over the past 2 months or so, gathering up ideas and sketches of what I'm hearing as a backing for these 2 CD's.

The past few weeks I've been practicing my guitar and keyboards, hand drums, etc in preparation for these albums, and I'm now at the stage where I'm playing comfortably again, and 'letting the music flow' in a creative way (and not just focusing on the technical aspects of the performance).  8)

Now that I'm into the tracking stage, things are really moving along quickly as the projects take form and shape ... it's all going quite well, even under the pressure of a self imposed deadline of Apr.30 ... this year!  That only leaves 3 weeks from the time of this post.   So you'll forgive me if I'm not very prolific around the boards, as I'm in hyper focus mode til then.. hopefully coming up for air once in a while, like now, to say hello and make sure the world is still turning as it should, even in my absence lmao  :P  :P :P
 8)

So tracking, mixing, testing, mixing, and then Mastering is my focus, while Maureen works on the design we've talked about, and getting the artwork and text content together, and preparing for mass duplication and sales and marketing.   The Park management is anxiously awaiting the arrival of the new CD's to make them available to the throngs of visitors that will flow through the park once again this spring and summer season.

As I listen back to the wilderness sound tracks, I'm taken back to a very serene and tranquil place, that truly is, for me, the "Algonquin Experience"

onward. -
stay tuned..

thanks for your interest guys ...

Both CD's are now printed and packaged for distribution, ...  yippee!

and while I didn't get the 'exclusive' distribution deal from the 'Friends of Algonquin' who publish and distribute various products to their list of retailers, they did place an order, so we're very pleased to make this announcement.  :)

This means we'll be able to retail the two projects "Wolves Of Algonquin" & "Loons Of Algonquin" to our list of retailers and outlets we've developed over the years.

So far, those who have advanced copies have said they've really enjoyed the albums, and we're expecting sales to go well.

We've been so busy promoting and putting this together, we've not had time for much else.

I'm hoping we'll have the new CD's in the gmhCafe Store soon too!    (where has the summer gone?)

I'll post links etc as they become available.

I've been working on a new CD ... another Music & Nature project called

"Spring Peeper Frogs" (For Sleep & Relaxation)

It actually came about as a result of a request for 'spring peepers' for sleep ....
and I happen to have quite a few recordings of frogs including peepers, Gray Tree Frog, American Toad, Bull Frogs, Chorus Frogs and more.

Since the album is meant to help with sleep and relaxation, the music will be somewhat subdued so as not to interfere with 'drifting off', but rather, enhance that process.

The CD features acoustic guitar, Folk guitar, Native Flute, Piano and keyboards, and Tabla drums/percussion.

I have one more piece yet to compose to complete the CD which will run approx. 60min.

This was originally slated as the opening piece for the CD but I'm thinking it's more fitting as piece 2.
In case you haven't seen it posted elsewhere.. here it is for your convenience.

Post by: Glenn on February 17, 2015, 02:17:14 AM

A few days ago I got a call from a man, asking if I'd be able to record his son and daughter who are in their early 20's ... and have been singing together for many years, and he asked if I'd produce a CD for them to market for retail, and of course, he wants to have a recording of them before more time slips by.. it's been something he's been meaning to do for a long time, he told me.   8)  We parents all love to have recordings, pics, movies of our kids!  :)

Through the course of our subsequent meeting and conversation, I found out this man, his son and daughter (who are Native N. Am.) sing and drum in the traditional First Nation's style of music.

The opportunity to record these two, performing original songs is exciting, and it feels good to be able to help them bring their music 'out there' to share with others.

=======

The Recording - Session 1

So today, we recorded the duo, - and going for a 'live off the floor' sound.. I chose to record with one stereo condenser mic, recording at 96KHz - 24bit - direct, no limiting or compression or EQ... this will be done in mix down.

I fed the mic output into my Peavey Mixer, so I could monitor with headphones and switch to speakers when needed... this allowed me to monitor the levels from an adjacent room, which worked out well.

Did a quick listening test, - covered the furnace blower vent duct in the room, removed a clock (tick tick) and warned that if any trains came by, we'd have to go for a re-take ... lol.   (luckily no trains came by)

The mic was placed near the center of the room, the two singers facing one another with mic in between them. They were both facing the center of the stereo mic so the voices are both in the middle of the stereo field instead of divided left and right side, as might normally be done with two singers. This arrangement also helped accommodate the hand drum that Loren was beating.  So all elements were recorded down the middle of the stereo field.

After a quick test, we shifted the mic just above head level so as to pick up more 'voice'  and less drum, yet still get the definition of the drum.   We then had to adjust the distance of the two singers from the mic to balance the energy in the voices - which meant putting a piece of tape on the floor to mark their standing position, so things would remain consistent from one recording to the next. They were about 3ft from the mic.

I calibrated the mic level to match my output meter levels on my mixer so I could see what the signal was doing as we recorded, and aimed at approx. -18 to  -12dB average levels with peaks slightly hotter than that, so there was still plenty of headroom in the recording (good thing too, because it got pretty dynamic at times).

Really enjoyable listening to these songs from Loren and Nancy today!

We only got half the songs recorded today, so it's another session booked next week.

fun stuff!

P.S. >>  I won't be doing any mixing/editing till after all recording is done, but...   8)
I just had a quick listen to the recording and it sounds pretty good, even in it's raw state   8)

They'll be pleased, I'm sure.

Update on the CD project we've been working on for our Native singers.

We finished all the tracking in session 2, which went well.  Did a re-take of one of the songs from session 1.

11 songs recorded in total.

All the songs are in the box now - waiting for importing into the DAW
... coming soon.

==========================
Side note: it was interesting to learn about the different types of Native hand drumming and styles of singing - some songs are for 'healing' while others are sung in 'competitions' and both have a different style.   There are various kinds of 'beats' or patterns as well - and I found it interesting to note that NONE have the pattern of ' bom bom bom bom, bom bom bom bom" where the accent is on the first beat - like most western movies portray, where you hear a so called 'native drum beat'.  I'm sure it must make some heads shake and gets a laugh or two from those who know better.
 :)

I think it's great that so many of the younger generation have embraced their heritage and are re-discovering their culture and finding expression through it!
 :)

Update to the CD project with "Lorne & Nancy Pawis" Native Song & Drumming.

Recorded 'Live - off the floor" with a stereo Mic and digital recorder in 2 sessions. (mid/late Feb.)

While the artwork, front, back and inside front covers are being drafted, I'll be busy going over the recorded material, getting it prepared for the Mastering process.   8)

I've just finished cleaning up the 'non-content' of the recordings, so we are now working with clean raw files.   11 songs in total recorded. approx. running time = 40 minutes.

==================

Now it's on to processing and Mastering all this week.  :)

Since we weren't in a studio setting for the recording, - we were in a 12' X 15' living room -  Not ideal for recording, but we work with what we got!  8) (clocks removed, aquarium unplugged, furnace vent covered).  ;D

There likely won't be much heavy processing on this one, as I want to keep it as pristine as possible.  Some light compression, a few peak transient adjustments, RMS leveling and optimizing, some EQ, and possibly a tad (very minimal amount) of reverb to set the recording into a 'space' that replaces the dry 'room-ish' tell tale sound in the original recording.

- hoping to have a 'listening session' with those involved in the project, later this week, and then do any needed re-tweaks, and then on to duplicating, printing, registering etc...  the CD should be on the market in a few weeks, by mid April/15 - :)

We may also make the digital downloads available through our gmhCafe Store. will keep ya posted!

 :)
Title: Our own little Pow Wow Re: what's goin' on
Post by: Glenn on March 20, 2015, 12:45:43 AM
the blog continues...  ;D

Update >  Mastering is done on the new CD being produced for the native singers and drummers.

as expected, there wasn't a lot of call for much processing, - compression, EQ, a tad of reverb, and some RMS optimization,  - a few other special treatments for enhancement, but basically that was it.

I'm happy with the way the master came out!

yeah, we had our own little Pow Wow tonight - a listening session of the Master  ... and they love it!  :)

so... the rest is a green light... on to the paperwork end of things (yuck) ... registering tunes etc...

someone else is taking care of the covers, and content etc...

after that it's on to the manufacturer in the big city.

:)

I'll see about getting permission to post a sampler preview or clip of a couple of the pieces ... maybe as part of some extra promotion or something to help them get the CD launched.

They're really excited about this release - their first CD!

stay tuned for updates.  :)

Title: Distant Trains Re: what's goin' on
Post by: Glenn on March 23, 2015, 03:14:34 PM
I decided to go out and record the past few nights.
Last year, while in the hospital, my 'room mate' asked if I had any train recordings, after he heard some of my other work on CD, so I told him I'd see about getting something produced and give him a call.

He said he likes to go to sleep while listening to the distant trains in the summertime when the window is open - it helps him get to sleep he said, and thought it would be nice to have a recording for the times he can't have the window open.  :)

Since the time of year is such that the bush is extremely quiet, no leaves, not much activity at all... I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to capture some of the 'distant Trains".

I already have lots of close up trains at crossings etc. but these aren't conducive to 'sleep' ... They are loud and in your face ... very dynamic, and not what I have in mind for a sleep CD.

I have to drive for about 30 minutes down the highway then on to the back roads toward the rail line.  This puts my mics in earshot of rumbles and whistles as the train passes going up or down the grade.   I like it when it goes up the grade as the sound of the engines begin to resonate ...   8)

Tonight, if the conditions are right, I may go back out and place 3 mics in different locations along the back roads in the same relative area - within good earshot of the distant trains and the train crossings so the whistle goes off at various times as the train sweeps across the panorama for 20 minutes or so.  I figure one of the mics will have a slightly 'better' recording because of ambient location.. so this is where numbers are good.. = options of which recording to use.  :)

Yep, it takes about 20 minutes for the train to approach, come to medium distance, and slowly fade off with the whistle blowing at the various crossings.  The key is to get the wanted sound to be close enough, but yet still sound 'distant'.  We want to hear the engines rumble and far off whistles echoing across the land.  That's my aim.  8)

So 3 trains going by would make an hour recording.  That will take all night 11pm - 5am  8) to record. And it may take more than one or two nights to get just the right sound, ambience, no planes or jets etc, - a nice challenge!  ;D

we'll see how it goes.
 :)

> Attached : a little clip of one of the segments I got the other night, it was snowing, so the mic picked up the snowflakes falling on the ground etc... so not the best recording for what I'm aiming at.
It'll give you an idea of what I'm going for though.
 :)

Very nice, Glenn. Trains figure in a lot of my songs.

I grew up in Crystal City, Missouri, which is right on the Mississippi River, and webbed with railroad lines. Or it was in my youth. Only one is still used now.  Almost every place I have called home for a time has had the rails within earshot. I can hear a freight rolling by as I type. The whistle is both a call to go, and a sign of home. The only thing I miss here is the moan of the barge tows on the river.

Title: New CD Release Re: what's goin' on
Post by: Glenn on April 07, 2015, 02:58:52 PM
Hey all,

April 07/15

I've just finished mixing and Mastering the CD I've been working on over the past few months,

"Spring Peeper Frogs"
- for sleep and relaxation
(C) Glenn Hubert 2015

It's now uploaded to the gmhCafe Store (http://www.gmhcafestore.ca/collections/frontpage/products/spring-peeper-frogs-for-sleep-relaxation) ...it'll be in the shops very soon.

4 Instrumentals make up this project which includes a continuous background of spring peeper frogs throughout the recording.
I can almost guarantee that anyone who listens to this with headphones on and eyes closed will be on the nod before the CD ends or your money back!

1. Night Journey 16:00
2. Spring Evening  16:39
3. Quietude  16:48
4. Dream Away 14:27

The Spring Peeper Frogs were recorded in a remote and secluded area in Northern Ontario, Canada, with my Zoom H2 digital field recorder, to which I produced the accompanying instrumental music, which includes relaxing acoustic guitar, Native Flute, Piano, and layers of orchestral synths.
The Spring Peeper Frogs are a sound that many of us in the Northern Hemishpere look forward to hearing each spring. It's an iconic sound, and helps many to drift off to sleep, or just relax and let go.  8)

You can preview, purchase the CD, or download the whole album in our gmhCafe Store (http://www.gmhcafestore.ca/collections/frontpage/products/spring-peeper-frogs-for-sleep-relaxation)

Limited time Special:  buy 2 CD's and you'll get a third FREE!

Enjoy!  :)

Title: Go to sleep with Rainfall - Re: what's goin' on
Post by: Glenn on July 18, 2015, 02:58:34 PM
I've been very busy recording, and editing several "Nature Only" projects this past 6 months or so.

These albums have been something I've wanted to do for a long time, and time is a precious commodity these days, it seems.  8)

I'll discuss the other albums once they're Mastered and ready for listening, but for now, I'd like to share my latest Album/CD, which is Mastered and awaiting printing, pressing and shrink wrap, to be ready for retail in our gmhCafeStore (http://www.gmhcafestore.ca/)

The Album is titled  "Tranquil Algonquin Rain" a "Nature Only" Recording and is also "Part of the Algonquin Wilderness Series" (a collection of recordings produced for Algonquin Park).
I intentionally produce these 'nature only' albums without music so that people can enjoy the pure unadulterated sounds of nature, for personal enjoyment, relaxation, sleep, etc.  (There's quite a few with music and nature, so you have a selection to choose from.)  :)

Tranquil Algonquin Rain - 1 hr. continuous play - was recorded with my Zoom H2 digital field recorder, in the early pre-dawn hours during mid-summer, on the shore of a secluded lake in the wilds of Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario Canada.  There are no highways, rail lines, or industry or man made sounds, in the area where I recorded, as I had to portage the canoe deep into the wilderness, finding a secluded lake to camp and record, and take in some relaxation myself... actually for both my wife (Maureen) and I.

The entire album features only the sound of gentle rainfall, no wind, no thunder or lightning strikes, no birds or other extraneous sounds ... just a lovely relaxing tranquil rain.

The beautiful wilderness of Algonquin Provincial Park, made famous in part by the world renowned  "Group of Seven" artists, and visited by thousands of eager adventurers each year, who camp along the main routes with trailers and tents, while those more adventuresome types canoe, hike, and backpack the backwoods via thousands of Km. of trails and rivers and lakes that weave all through the park.  These trails and canoe routes were created by our native Algonquin First Nations people's long before the white man ever set foot on these lands.  The park is larger than Prince Edward Island, our smallest Canadian province.  8)

Tranquil Algonquin Rain will be my 24th Album released and available in the store (http://www.gmhcafestore.ca/), and will also be available in other retail outlets throughout Ont.  :)

I'll post a sample 'teaser' of the recording once it's in the store and ready for retail.
 :)

lol, Neil   :P   .. I gotta agree though, when I listen to that voice on those full length album 'previews' you can listen to on the store... that voice could definitely be a little more... um soothing perhaps.  I'll see if the powers that be can have that changed.      (I think it's done somewhat for copyright protection.)
I'm just glad it's NOT on the actual Album!  :P

nice to hear you enjoyed the listen.
and thanks for the comments and feedback.  much appreciated.  :)

Hey MB, thanks for listen and feedback.  :)

Yeah, a lot of people really love listening to rain to help with sleep... great when you're on the road in a hotel room  - helps mask the strange noises etc.    I just like listening when chillin' or wanting to have a mid day WINTER'S nap .. lol.  :P

I hope you got the download ok, and that it was a good experience.
thanks so much for your support!

After another listen to the players 'preview' voicer, we decided that the female voice was better than what we had, so the rest of them will be treated in a similar way.

thanks Neil, for the feedback - it'll probably take a week or more to make the changes... but we'll get there.

The Album, along with the new "Preview" voicing can be heard here:

thanks bear .... for the listen and the kind words.  :)

I recorded a thunder and rain storm yesterday ... one that suddenly built up ... so it was a rush to get the recorder and levels set up before the onslaught of the main storm.
For ease of recording, in the rain, I not only have a 'cover' for the mic and recorder, but I've used an umbrella, - the kind you put on your deck or patio to shade you and keep the rain off...

The thing with this large diameter umbrella is, that if it's place too close to the mic, closer than a 1.5 meters, or about 5 ft. ... you can hear too much of the rain drops hitting the canvas umbrella, which tends to drown out the ambient rain on the surrounding bush and grass etc ...  ???   :-\     .... So I decided to place the umbrella under a big tree, and hang it as high as possible (about 9 ft. up) in the branches of the tree, and secured it tightly with wire so it wouldn't blow off in the event of strong winds.  ;D

This has worked out really well, as you can hear some of the rain on the canvas, as if you are in a tent, yet you can hear all the surrounding ambient sounds of the rainfall... and the lightning and thunder boomers are very distinct and clear.

Just a bit more editing on this one and it'll be a finished work.... which I may or may not put music to...

hmmmm
I'm thinking I might release two versions... one "Music with Thunder and Rain", and another with Thunder and Rain only - for those who like to have the choice!

Do you think this is a good way to go?   I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on this.

Glenn  :)

what a month.. hectic is the word that comes to mind.

With renovations still underway, and music gear and recording equipment still packed away, we are making headway and I think I'll be un packing and bringing out the gear this month.. yay... if all goes well. lol

Giving Back:
One of my goals for 2016 was to help out - or shall I say 'give back' to nature since she's allowed me to share my music and nature recordings with so many over the past 4 or 5 years through the sales of my Albums and CD's.

So now it's time give back... and we've set up a 'fund raising' program for Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary - which is a short drive down the highway... a 400 acre piece of wilderness, where they rehabilitate wolves, bear, deer, moose, beaver, and many many animals that need their care.   Some of the animals are full time residents, as they cannot be released since they are unable to fend for themselves in the wild due to 'human habituation' ...  others are rehabilitated from injuries etc, and then released.

I'll have more details as time permits... and as the details are finalized... but it's happening.. so I am very excited to be part of the Sanctuary's fund raising efforts through the sales of my albums and CD's online and in key locations where there's good exposure.

The folks at the Sanctuary were pretty excited too, when they saw the number of products they could market... and took a full box of CD's (8 titles) down to the "Home and Cottage Show" in Toronto this past weekend....  I hope they did well !

I also left 4 recorders there on the grounds.. to record wolves, lynx, beaver, fox, and many animals and the natural surrounding wildlife that makes the sanctuary home....  I collected the mics yesterday, and have some very good recordings ... this is cool.  Always wanted to hear what a lynx sounded like...  and now I have some great recordings of it and the Arctic Wolves, coyotes etc.  Even a beaver came over to the mic to say hello.  lol

all for now ... more details later.

continued from previous post:

A couple more pics for our visit to Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary in Muskoka (Rosseau Ont.) where we are initiating a Fund Raising Program to help rehabilitate and care for the animals there.

Managing Director and Biologist, Howard Smith and I had some interesting conversation about the Sanctuary and it's resident and rehab facilities, where Howard explained the need for new enclosures, and all the work that needs to be done to make this happen.

Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary will be carrying 8 of my Albums / CD's - available in their main office and the 'school house' where people gather for more educational info about the Sanctuary.

ONLINE:  The Albums will also be available online on a special page dedicated to Aspen V.W.S. for online fundraising.
More info on this later, as the page is currently being completed at the time of this posting.

Info to follow.    We'll be doing a LOT of promotion for this fundraiser, so we can help the animals out.

Pics
1 .... Managing Director / Biologist at Aspen Valley - Howard Smith talking with me about the wolves and the newly arrived coyote ....  Yodi the coyote :)  and the need for new enclosures.

2. The coyote came over towards us as we talked and decided to let out a few howls for us.. which got the Arctic Wolves going too... what a chorus of howls that was!!!  very cool.

Title: Update.. Re: what's goin' on
Post by: Glenn on August 21, 2016, 07:05:16 PM
It's been way longer a time than I thought it would be... but...

we finished our renovations Jan - June 2016

July we listed the house for sale and got offers right away.

Closing date got delayed.... closes this Friday !!!  wow.

We've been packing up our belongings, and downsizing galore.

Ready to make the move.... stuff is in storage.

We'll be camping for several wks while we build a tiny cabin in the woods to keep us warm and dry while our new modular home is being built and delivered in Nov.    :)

I just hope the snow isn't flying by then... we'll see.

Music stuff is all packed, along with the computer stuff... so no change for me til we get back online and set up.

Meantime, we'll be camping, clearing land, and jumping into the pioneering spirit ...... a  dream come true ..... as we've acquired 40 acres of wilderness that adjoins 200 acres of Crown Land ... a bonus.

This is a life long dream that has come to fruition for both Maureen and I and we are so excited to be embarking on this new adventure and new chapter in our lives.

..... now.... where's that axe ..... lol .... not THAT axe (my guitar)  :P .......  I'll be swinging a different 'axe' in coming months... clearing a camp site, clearing bush, and getting firewood for the coming winters!!

Cabin in the woods..... Cabin in the woods.....   has been my dream motto.... now coming true, iwth lots of intention and goal planning, and lots of action and hard work to follow it up.... makes one's dreams transition into a new reality.  :)

So, if you have a 'dream' .... hold onto it... set goals that support that dream, and plan steps on how to move toward what you want..... then apply yourself and make it happen.

Intentions lead to thoughts, which leads to action, which creates your reality.

cheers.  :)

Good news ... we're almost in the house.  (We've been saying that for a while.  LOL)  This has been one of the longest ventures ever.  We are set for the winter mind you I had no idea we would be in an off grid cabin this long.  It has been a learning experience for sure.  Glenn says "hi"  to all.  I get into the village occasionally to quickly check email, and shop and get back home before dark.  It's a long drive along the wintery back roads.  :)

Soon we'll be back into the full swing.
