Saving energy
« on: December 05, 2011, 08:08:02 AM »
Talking with people who have began to change over to alternative energy, one topic which frequently comes up is the need to cut back on "wasted energy".  One type of energy waster is "phantom power".  Below is a link to a page which lists household appliances, and the "wasted power" they use.

How much power is wasted in your household?    Whether someone is changing over to alternate power, or remains on the grid, this could be a helpful tool in eliminating unnecessary power costs. :)

I started using a device called a "Kill-a-Watt" to measure the energy consumed by different devices in our home.

It's read-outs are Volt, Amp, Watt, Hz, and Kwh.

It'll be interesting to see what our energy consumption is, and if my estimates of "high energy" consumers are correct.  So far I've tracked the fish aquarium, and the washing machine.  Next ... hmmm ... there's lots to track in this house.

Then, I just need to figure out how to use the information to help streamline our energy consumption.   :)

You can learn more about the devices here

that's interesting info Maureen.
I didn't even realize that various electronic things could use/waste so much power, even when turned 'off'.

hmm
:)
Be happy with what you have.

Thanks for the link Maureen.  I'm going to go around the house, and unplug anything which is "conveniently" left plugged in.  I'm not sure how much I'll save, but a penny saved is a penny earned, right.  ;)
