new mic
« on: March 04, 2017, 04:48:51 AM »
got a new mic. I was using a Rode NT1A but I won a gift voucher from Amazon for 35. This mic, an AKG P5 (Perception) was given a good review. Some reviewers rated it higher than the Shure 58.
So I used my voucher and made a purchase. It was 36 with free postage so I figured I'd got a deal.
I am a condenser mic user for vocals in the studio but I have to say my first few recordings with this mic blew me away. It's noe my main microphone and, until I get another, will remain so. I shall still keep the Rode as I record other singers with that one.
Here's a 'well known' example of the AKG (attached)

Sounds like you found a bargain there Dave.   It seems to have pretty good clarity, especially for the price!
Did you need to EQ it much or is this vox recorded 'flat' as is?  ... just curious.

The song is one of my childhood favourites too, I think it was Eddie Arnold ... or am I thinking of Cattle Call... ??  lol... maybe both ?   :P

I remember this song being a hit for Marty Robbins but anyone could have done it. We use the same tune for some of our church hymns.
That EQ was flat . I just rolled off the bass below 100htz. If anything I'd say it had too much high end response. Could do with a good de-esser but have not found one I can use correctly as yet.
Welcome home.

ahh, yes ... Marty Robbins, of course.  ;D

Considering all that was done was a gentle roll off of the bottom end... I'd say it has a pretty good frequency response.

Would be interesting to hear the mic with same settings on female vocal (Babs perhaps?) which may show some other 'characteristics' in the mic as a comparison to what it delivered with your vox, which it seemed to handle in a pretty transparent manner for the most part, IMO  8)

Good find.

Just some rambling thoughts to add to the conversation... and welcoming any other input/thoughts as well...    ;D

When I've had a variety of mics to choose from for any given application, I'll record the same source with the various mics to see which one captures the characteristics of the sound the best (to my ears anyway) and use that mic as a starting point for recording, so then tweaking and EQing is minimal... as you've done here... just a tweak to clean the spectrum up of unwanted frequencies, and perhaps just add a tad if needed to enhance other frequencies.   I still have certain mics I use for certain applications... like my Audio Technica Pro 5 for my vox,  an AKG for female vox and for my acoustic guitar, SM57 for hand drums .... it took a few years to actually figure out which mics worked 'better' on which sources, as they all have their own 'colour' or 'built in EQ' one could say.  ...  I used to gawk at the Polar Pattern charts and Frequency Response curve charts of mics I was interested in purchasing, but hearing it on intended sound sources was the only way to know for sure how it was going to sound on playback.  I was once advised to look for the 'flattest' frequency response curve when shopping for speakers as that would deliver the most 'transparent' sound ... I think it can also be said  the same goes for mics -  the flatter the 'curve' across the spectrum the more faithful reproduction of the original sound, and I've see some hefty price tags on some awsome studio mics .... said to have a very 'flat' response... but I've also heard some mics that have little bumps and dips in the 'curve' that produce a wonderful 'character' that enhances certain instruments or vocals... so having some 'colour' inherent in a mic can be a 'good' thing in my humble opinion.

thoughts.. ?

Here's another done with my new AKG. This time more of a talky to get a better indication of vocal response.
