When I read that The 68th United Nations General Assembly declared 2016 the "International Year of Pulses", I thought of the heart pulse and personal health.

So, off I went, to the UN site, where I learned that the "Pulses" they're referring to are the food Pulses.  hmm ... Here goes the learning curve again.  :)  This is the first time I've seen the term "Pulses" relating to food.

What are pulses and why are they important?

The "Food and Agriculture Organization" of the UN www.fao.org defines Pulses as "annual leguminous crops yielding between one and 12 grains or seeds of variable size, shape and colour within a pod, used for both food and feed.  The term “pulses” is limited to crops harvested solely for dry grain.    They include Bambara beans, Beans, dry, Broad beans, horse beans, dry, Chick peas, Cow peas, dry, Lentils, Lupins, Peas, dry, Pigeon peas, Pulses, nes, and Vetches." 

They continue to say that "pulses are an important dietary product, as they are a vital source of plant-based proteins and amino acids.  Pulses also help address obesity and help manage chronic diseases such as diabetes, coronary conditions and cancer."

In my opinion, this is good news for people in both developing and developed countries.  One, to help in the supply of food to developing countries; and two, to increase awareness of the value of these foods to people in the developed countries.  In my humble opinion, if people understood more about legumes and how to add them into their daily diets, more people may be willing to eat legumes, rather than processed food.  The fao site states that they are a good source of protein, so may be a good choice over processed meats and meats from poor sources. 

Even moreso, it's my hope that with the recognition of the importance of legumes as food for the world,  this UN declaration offers us some hope that we will have continued access to legumes which haven't been messed with by Monsanto, and other such companies.

I also look forward to the creation of new recipes, and ideas of how to use legumes in our diets.  I know these are good food for us but need some interesting recipes to make them more palatable than they tend to be, at least in my cooking experience.  :)

Anyone have a good recipe or two which includes any of the pulses?  There's such a wide range of choices, so, I'm sure someone has an awesome recipe or two to share.  ;)

I fixed our New Year black-eyed peas Creole style this year, with a hamhock, peppers, onion, and celery, and added a package of our frozen kale toward the end of cooking. Very good, and a bit jazzier than our normal Hoppin' John. ;)
Better a crust in peace than a feast in a house of contention.

Your recipe sounds delicious Old Goat, and easy.  :) 

I'm trying to introduce more beans into our meals.  Last night we had baked beans using Black Beans.
1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup molasses
1/2 tsp prepared mustard
1 Tbsp brown sugar
2 tsp cidar vinegar
1 Tbsp salt
Mix it all together, combine with beans, and bake.

Thanks, NNG. It's hard to go wrong with dried beans, peas and lentils. Hard, but not impossible. ::)

My first wife, lo these many years ago, did not listen when I said not to use just soybeans in the soup, just a small portion. As it happened, Mom and Little Brother came to dinner. The best my sainted ( :P ) mother could come up with was, "My, this tastes so good for you." :-*

Almost 40 years after that divorce,  I still hadn't lived that one down. ;)
